G-SIG Hands Over Flood and Landslide Risk Maps to Suco Cribas, Manatuto Administrative Post, Municipality of Manatuto
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, G-SIG, in collaboration with local authorities from Suco Cribas, successfully handed over five digital maps covering all five aldeias: Aldeia Uebani, Aldeia Ranak, Aldeia Ata-Hok, Aldeia Caunua, and Aldeia Tuquetin. These maps focus on identifying flood and landslide risks across the suco.

The digital maps are the result of close collaboration with local authorities through Community Participatory Discussions conducted throughout 2025 and continued into early 2026. The process aimed to identify areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides within the suco. These discussions involved local authorities and community leaders from each aldeia to validate previously identified risk areas and to provide additional information on critical infrastructure, particularly those most exposed to natural hazards.

This initiative is part of G-SIG’s broader effort to strengthen community resilience by enhancing preparedness for natural disasters through data-driven approaches. By providing accurate and accessible risk information, the maps are expected to support local authorities in making informed decisions, especially in future development planning and land use management.

During the final map distribution session, local authorities and community members in Suco Cribas expressed strong appreciation for the initiative. They highlighted that this was the first time they had access to maps of this kind, which will greatly assist them in understanding their territory and the natural risks affecting their land and communities, including future expansion areas.
On behalf of the local authorities, we sincerely thank G-SIG for voluntarily providing these flood and landslide risk maps to Suco Cribas. As community leaders, we are very happy because these maps help us better understand risk areas and support our community in making informed decisions in the future, whether for housing or farming. — Rita Soares da Costa, Chief of Aldeia Ata-Hok, Suco Cribas
Representing G-SIG, Program Manager Julmira de Almeida also expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration from local authorities throughout the process.
Thank you very much to all community leaders in Suco Cribas, including the Suco Chief, for welcoming us and working closely with us to complete these maps successfully. We hope that these maps will not only serve as information but also as practical tools to guide decision-making in the future. — Julmira de Almeida, G-SIG Program Manager
The handover event was attended by local authorities of Suco Cribas, including its leadership structures and community leaders from all five aldeias within the suco.
