Join Us Weekly Mapathon for Myanmar Earthquake 2025

Hello mappers, on Friday, March 28, 2025, an earthquake with magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4 struck the city of Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar), and Bangkok, Thailand. This disaster caused severe damage to infrastructure, killed approximately 3,000 people, and injured around 4,700 others. It is one of the most significant natural disasters, severely impacting the affected areas and emergency response efforts.

In response to this situation, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), through the HOT Tasking Manager platform, has launched emergency mapping projects to provide critical data for decision-makers, including the governments of both countries, to support their response efforts.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Association of Grupo Sistema Informasaun Geografia (G-SIG), with the Community OpenStreetMap Timor-Leste, will organize a Mapathon to voluntarily contribute to OpenStreetMap data. This effort will assist governments and responders in making timely and informed decisions by providing open and accessible geospatial data.

This Mapathon will take place as part of G-SIG’s Weekly Mapping activity according to the schedule shown in the brochure. The mapping session will be facilitated by Julmira de Almeida, who serves as the Community Project Management at OpenStreetMap Timor-Leste. Julmira is an advanced mapper in Timor-Leste with extensive experience using open-source mapping tools such as OSM, MapSwipe, Vespucci, Java OSM, QGIS, and more.

We invite you to join us in this session to contribute to the success of this mapping effort. Every click, every traced building, and every mapped road brings hope to those in need. Your contribution will play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable communities affected by this disaster.
